Recently we launched our Early Careers Fund to help bring about the future of care for heart and lung patients.

The Early Careers Fund is a new initiative designed to provide funding in the early years of a healthcare career. The aim of the fund is to allow grant recipients to ringfence time for research, meaning that hospitals don’t have to make the choice between clinical care and research.

The fund will support healthcare professionals at both Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, two world-renowned hospitals that specialise in the treatment of heart and lung disease. The hospitals have pioneered many innovative treatments and their staff includes some of the most highly skilled and experienced medical professionals in the UK. We want to harness this expertise to help create the future of care for heart and lung patients.

Richard Bowyer, chief executive of Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity, said:

We are delighted to launch this new initiative, which will play a vital role in supporting the next generation of medical professionals. By providing funding and support to those at the beginning of their careers, we hope to help them achieve their full potential and to make a real difference in the lives of patients.

Our Early Careers Fund will provide funding for:

  • two newly appointed consultants to ringfence 50% of their time for research over four years
  • annual fellowship awards open to a wide range of healthcare professions, including nurses, midwives, psychologists, allied healthcare professionals and others, to explore their ideas and find new insights into the care for people with heart and lung conditions
  • annual awards designed to encourage the integration of research into the day-to-day working of a clinical team.

The Early Careers Fund is part of a wider commitment by Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity to support medical research and innovation, which is part of our work to improve the lives of people with heart and lung conditions.
