Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals have been responsible for some of the most significant medical breakthroughs ever made in heart and lung health. Thanks to the incredible generosity of charitable trusts and foundations, the Charity has supported a range of projects benefitting thousands of patients, their families and staff through:

Innovation - supporting the development, testing, or introduction of cardiac and respiratory healthcare improvement initiatives. The programme of digital transformation to enable patients with cystic fibrosis to self-monitor remotely and have virtual consultations to minimise unnecessary trips to hospital has been a phenomenal success.

Research - funding projects to expand the boundaries of medical knowledge and improve the ways in which heart and lung conditions are prevented, diagnosed and treated. A current example is pioneering research into the risk of sudden death in young, healthy people and athletes.

Equipment and infrastructure – supporting capital projects and investing in leading technology to improve outcomes for patients, such as through the purchase of a new genetic sequencer.

Soma Pujari, Executive Trustee from Kusuma Trust UK who donated £104,000 towards the purchase of the sequencer, said:
At Kusuma Trust UK we understand that to deliver newer, better treatments needs constant updating of equipment. Royal Brompton Hospital’s Genetics and Genomic Lab is one of four in the country providing specialist genetic sequencing for cardiac patients and one of three for lung diseases. We are pleased to support the purchase of a genetic sequencer again after our first grant in 2016 to help them provide rapid accurate diagnosis for more patients.

Patient experience - improving the experience beyond activity that the NHS can be expected to support. This has included £50,000 towards an Activity Coordinator to help combat the isolation experienced by, in particular, long stay patients.

Staff support - in the form of fellowships, training and other initiatives, which has included improving wellbeing. Listening Ear is a helpline, which helped over 100 ICU staff members access counselling to navigate their wellbeing during the pandemic.
