The benefits of 3D printing

In recent years, 3D printing has taken the world by storm. Its impact on the health sector has already been immense and its potential is staggering. Eventually, ‘bioprinting’ using living cells could allow new tissue, or even whole organs to be produced to repair diseased hearts or lungs.

3D printing enables our consultants to assess 3D replicas of hearts and lungs in the diagnosis of diseases.

For Marfan Syndrome

Marfan Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. 3D-printed, ‘made to measure’ implants have been helping clinicians repair the aortas of patients with this condition. The technology is drastically improving the quality of life for our patients.

For congenital heart defects

Clinicians at our hospitals are using 3D-printed models of the real hearts of patients with congenital heart disease and other conditions, to decide on the best treatments for patients, without the need for invasive techniques.

Unlike 2D scans, 3D models allow clinicians to feel for areas of greater thickness and other indicators of disease, giving them far greater scope for diagnosis. The models are also being used by cardiologists to train new staff.
